In March of this year one of my all-time favorite writers passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. Dare One The Wild Side. As long as I can remember I have been following his work, an example of which you see above, a great innovator and constant inspiration. Undisputed style master. So nice to take a break from my name. Painting a different name is super refreshing. This was executed behind the Black Bull Tavern.

The world looked just a little more stylish and colorful when Dare was still painting it. Rest In Power.

Season opener. 3 in ‘10

The first warm day in the new year I made the voyage back to my favorite lay up again. Feb. 2010. I had some cans of green to burn through and just went with that. I felt a little tiny bit rusty on that first one, but before long the hand un-cramps itself and all is well again.

This was that first one.

Back in December I was contacted by an old friend who has a successful set design, fabrication and event staging company, I used to do quite a bit of work with him and his crew. He had a graffiti install job for me that involved painting a few set pieces in the shop and then installing them at Muchmusic for a performance by an artist that shall remain nameless. After that I stayed on with the crew and continued to work with them on the opening title sequence for the Superbowl 44 and CBS ’s coverage of it. Big jobs both of them. Good times, long days..

Superbowl 44. this was all for the CBS opening title sequence and commercial break -station identification jump cuts. I have worked in the world of television and film for years and as T.V. goes this is as big as it gets. Millions of viewers. Funny thing is I didn’t even get to watch the Superbowl this year, I was working.
I wish I managed to get some better quality photos, it was so hectic and crazy in there while they were testing out the lighting and smoke machines. Barely had time to rush off these few shots.

The numbered lines and checks are all laid out in adhesive vinyl. Everything had to be measured super precisely with chalk lines and laid out carefully to keep everything straight and congruent. Now that is some warehouse space. I sure wouldn’t want to get tackled on this gridiron though.

Payday for this work ensured a merry Christmas indeed, just in time.

The log splitter. An almost unfair mechanical advantage. Major output, no blisters or backache.
Not bad for half a day’s work.

Another journey downriver. Such a beautiful stretch of river and land. Working retreats up there always clear the mind, a welcome escape from the hectic Toronto life. The focus of this trip was cutting firewood. We split enough wood to feed those stoves for a few winters I would venture to guess. Felt great to get away.

This place is like superman’s ‘fortress of solitude’ for me. Nothing like it.

A benefit for a Baltimore area writer recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Many thanks to Arek1 B.A. crew for including me in the roster. A very impressive line up of talented artists. A happy new year to all. Winter is most definitely here and the exterior painting season is over for me, for a couple months. I worked out a few drawings over the course of ‘09 and here are some of my favorites, plus some random older stuff. Enjoy.

These few above are from that era in which I was considering a tattoo apprenticeship, I honestly see a lot of weaknesses in them, and know that my well established tattoo artist friends could critique them to no end. Just the same I uploaded them to show that on occasion, I can draw more than just lettering.

The above drawing was used on a flyer for an artshow I had many years ago. Honestly I can’t really remember, 2001 perhaps.
